Rochester 84, Case Western Reserve 50

ROCHESTER, NY — The University of Rochester won its seventh straight game and 12th in the last 13 with an 84-50 victory over Case Western Reserve University at the Louis Alexander Palestra here this afternoon.

The Yellowjackets improved to 8-1 in the University Athletic Association. Rochester has a 1.5 game lead on Carnegie Mellon University (6-2). Washington and Chicago are both 5-4. The UAA champion receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Division III playoffs.

Case Western Reserve is 1-7 in the UAA, 5-14 overall. The Spartans have lost six in a row, all in UAA play.

Seth Hauben (Newton, MA/Newton South) led a balanced attack with 19 points and 13 rebounds. Hauben moved into second place in career rebounding at Rochester. He has 993 rebounds, 30 shy of all-time leader Chris Fite (1,023, 1988-92).

Tim Brackney (Columbia, MD/Archbishop Spaulding) had a career high 17 points, hitting 6 of 7 floor shots. Brendan McAllister (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) scored 13 points and Jon Onyiriuka (Painted Post, NY/Corning-Painted Post W.) scored 11. He grabbed six rebounds and blocked four shots.

Matt Cannan (Dublin, OH/Dublin Coffman) led the Spartans with 12 points. Funso Lafe (Chesterland, OH/Hawken) scored eight points. CWRU played without freshman point guard Jeremy Sallee (Hamilton, OH/Lakota East) and lost leading scorer Carson Oren (South Bend, IN/Marian Catholic) to an injury 12 minutes into the game.

Lafe fed Oren for a layup on the break to pull Case within 7-6 three minutes into the game. McAllister sank a pair of three-pointers in the next 51 seconds to ignite a 17-5 Rochester run for a 24-11 lead with 11:40 left. It was 43-21 at the half.

The game was Mike Neer’s 750th as a head coach, all at Rochester. In his 29th season, Neer has a career record of 468-282.
