The Spartans jumped out to an early lead only to have the Saints come back and draw even at six. After a Charles Atakora layup gave the Saints an 8-6 lead, the Spartans went on a 10-0 run to take a 16-8 advantage. The Saints trimmed the lead to six twice over the next two minutes but York fashioned a 13-3 run that increased the lead to 31-15 with 4:47 remaining in the half. The Spartans pushed the lead to 20 on a Joe Yeck trey before settling for a 40-23 halftime lead. A Spartan lead at the half usually equals a win as they are now 12-0 when leading at the intermission.
The Spartans came out on fire to start the second half as they began the stanza with a 14-3 run to increase the lead to 28 at 54-26 just 4:05 into the second half. The Spartan lead would not fall below 18 the rest of the way as the green and white cruised to the 24-point victory. The 24-point margin is their biggest conference victory of the season.
The Spartans were led by senior Ben Seibert as he tied his career-high with 18 points. Seibert also pulled down six rebounds in his 18 minutes of work. Junior Kenny Fass had another outstanding game as he had 14 points, six rebounds, six assists, a block and a steal for YCP. Freshman Chad McGowan was the third Spartan in double figures with 12 points.
Marymount received 11 points from Rick Palmer while Kip McCoy was the other Saint in double figures with 10 points. Brandon Parker pulled down a game-high seven rebounds in addition to his six points. Kevin Whitehead added six rebounds and four blocked shots for Marymount.
The Spartans, who are fifth in the nation in rebounding margin, held a slight 44-42 edge on the glass. The Saints are just one of two teams that have outrebounded the Spartans this year as they held a 12-rebound edge in their January 12 meeting in Arlington. York finished the game shooting 45.9% from the floor while Marymount converted just 33.9% of their attempts from the field. The Spartans also forced 23 Marymount turnovers, converting them into 26 points. York held a commanding 46-26 edge in points in the paint.
The Spartans return to action on Wednesday when they travel to Catholic University to face the Cardinals in a CAC contest. Game time is set for 8:00 pm at the DuFour Center.
