Salve Regina 66, Wentworth 41

NEWPORT, R.I. — After nearly four minutes of play, the score was Matt Grendal [SO/Foxboro, Mass.], seven (7), and everybody else, zero (0). Similar to two nights ago, an individual Seahawk did all the scoring while Salve Regina's defense held an opponent scoreless for the first several minutes of the ballgame.

Salve Regina University men's basketball defeated Wentworth Institute of Technology, 66-41, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) contest in Newport, Rhode Island. Grendal led the charge with seven points right out of the gate and had 11 by halftime as the Seahawks led by a dozen (34-22).

A three-pointer by Troy Ramey [SO/Newport, R.I.] gave Wentworth its only lead of the game (13-12) with under 10 minutes to play in the first half. Matt Coute [JR/Somerset, Mass.] answered with his own three-pointer, his first points of the game, to regain the lead for Salve Regina. Coute finished as the game's high scorer with 18 points.

A pair of free throws from Grendal culminated a 15-3 run by the Seahawks over a five-minute span in the first half. Salve Regina (13-8; 10-3 CCC) maintained a double-digit lead throughout the second half, leading by as many as 28 on two occasions. The Seahawks enjoyed a decisive rebounding edge (55-to-32) led by Chris Collier [SR/Exeter, N.H.], Grendal, and Jon Hazzard [SO/North Kingstown, R.I.] with 12, 10, and 10, respectively.

Andrew Rego [FR/Little Compton, R.I.] came off the Seahawk bench to score 11 points while Grendal finished with 17 points and a double-double.

Wentworth (6-14; 4-8 CCC) hosts Roger Williams in a doubleheader on Tuesday, February 8; Salve Regina enjoys a week off before playing at University of New England next Saturday.
