Wentworth 54, Salve Regina 45

NEWPORT, R.I. — Despite committing 35 turnovers, Wentworth Institute of Technology women's basketball defeated Salve Regina University, 54-45, in a Commonwealth Coast Conference (CCC) tilt in Newport, Rhode Island.

Wentworth forced Salve Regina into 29 turnovers while the Leopards scored 25 points off those miscues. Lesley Corda [JR/Fitchburg, Mass.] drove in a lay-up with 8:29 remaining in the first half, giving Wentworth a lead (16-14) it would never relinquish.

The Leopards led by as many as 13, following a free-throw by Whitney Alvarez [FR/Jaffrey, N.H.], with 2:07 left in the game. Less than a minute later, Salve Regina cut the deficit to six (48-42) after a lay-up from Jennifer Leahy [JR/Cresskill, N.J.].

Wentworth (7-13; 5-7 CCC) went 6-for-6 from the line in the final minute, including four from Alvarez. The freshman point guard led all scorers with 14 points. Cheyenne Noble [SO/Murrysville, Pa.] had a double-double with 13 points and a dozen rebounds for the Leopards.

For the visitors, it was only their fourth win in 34 all-time meetings with Salve Regina (last Leopard win came in December 1999). Three of those four victories have come in Newport, including today's upset. Wentworth leapfrogged University of New England for fifth place in the CCC North, but most likely needs wins in their final four conference games to have a chance at the final playoff spot from the division.

Salve Regina (12-6; 11-3 CCC) remains in first place in the CCC South before playing their next game against non-conference foe Tufts University on Tuesday, February 8; the Leopards host Roger Williams in a doubleheader.
