Otterbein 88, Baldwin-Wallace 75

WESTERVILLE, Ohio — Sophomore guard Dequan Owens scored 14 points tonight (Saturday, Feb. 5, 2005) as the Otterbein College men’s basketball team upset 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College, 88-75, in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rike Center in Westerville.

With its win, Otterbein improved to 15-6 overall and 10-4 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 16-5 overall and 9-5 in the OAC and lost for the second time this week.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets jumped out to an early four-point lead at 13-9 with 14:49 left when senior forward Thad Davis scored on a jump shot. Then Otterbein outscored B-W 10-5 to take its first lead at 19-18 when freshman guard Eric Murphy canned a three-pointer with 12:15 left in the first stanza. Otterbein then would build its lead to as many as 42-31 at the intermission when freshman guard Ross Banaszak canned a three-pointer.

Early in the second half, Otterbein built its lead to 13 points on two occassions with the final one being at 49-36 with just over 17 minutes remaining. B-W then outscored the Cardinals 22-14 to get as close as five points at 63-58 with 7:23 remaining in the game when Thad Davis connected on one of two foul shots. Otterbein then rebuilt its lead to a game-high 14 points at 81-67 with 1:10 left when senior guard Tony Borghese canned a trey.

Joining Owens in double figures for Otterbein were five other players as both Murphy, Borghese and senior forward Mark Church each had 11 points and both senior forward Mo Ross and junior forward Kevin King each had 10 markers.

For B-W, Thad Davis had a team-high 30 points and five rebounds and sophomore forward Tori Davis had 13 points and game-high seven rebounds. With his 30 points and five rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,772 career points and 915 career rebounds to rank fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Wednesday, Feb. 9 when they travel to Alliance to play Mount Union College at the Timken Physical Education Building at 7:30 p.m.
