Sul Ross State 86, Mary Hardin-Baylor 71

Belton, Tx. — The University of Mary Hardin-Baylor men’s basketball team overcame two big deficits, but the Crusaders could not overcome a third Sul Ross State advantage as the UMHB men dropped an 86-71 decision to the Lobos Saturday afternoon in Belton. The loss drops the Crusaders to 13-8 overall and 11-7 in American Southwest Conference play. Sul Ross State improves to 15-5 overall and 13-5 in the ASC with the victory.
Sul Ross State opened the game with a 14-2 run but UMHB fought back with a 22-9 run of its own to take a 24-23 lead with 6:48 left in the first half. The Lobos pushed it back to a four-point advantage by the half and led 34-30 at the break. Sul Ross went on an 8-0 run to open the second half to take a 12-point lead before the Crusaders fought back again and cut the lead to 47-45 with 13:48 remaining. Sul Ross then made one final run, using a 27-12 streak to take a 17-point lead and the Crusaders could not overcome that deficit.
Kevin Guyden led UMHB with a career-high 17 points off the bench and he also grabbed seven rebounds and added three assists. Adam Wiese had 13 points for the Crusaders. Rick Herrera led Sul Ross State with 18 points and Sidney Hooper added 17 more, but only shot 5-16 from the field. Three other Lobos also reached double figures in scoring. Sul Ross State out rebounded UMHB 43-36 and forced 19 turnovers in the victory.
The Crusaders will continue their home stand with two more ASC West Division games next week. UMHB will host Texas Lutheran for a 7:30 PM tip-off Thursday night at the Mayborn Campus Center before Schreiner comes to town for a 3:00 PM start on Saturday.
