Freshman Charlie Averkamp led all scorers with 26 points in addition to 13 rebounds and two blocked shots. The Lake Michigan Conference Rookie of the Year candidate netted Edgewood’s first seven points and shot 10-of-15 from the floor.
Senior Greg Blaska also tallied 13 rebounds to go along with 17 points. Junior Seth Cooper scored 15 of his 18 points in the second period, as the Eagles held on to their first place position in the LMC standings with two games left to play in the regular season.
Edgewood led 32-26 at halftime and increased its lead to 17 points midway through the second half. Marian was able to cut the margin to six on a layup by David Whitenack with 1:13 remaining in the contest, but the Eagles were able to get a pair of baskets by Cooper in the closing seconds to help seal the victory.
Despite being one of the top free throw shooting teams in all of NCAA Division III, Edgewood struggled from the foul line on just 13-of-23 shooting from the charity stripe. However, Edgewood managed to out-rebound the Sabres 46-26, including 16-8 on the offensive end.
