DUBUQUE, Iowa – The Loras College men’s basketball team survived a feisty Luther team to notch a 64-57 Iowa Conference home win.
The Duhawks scored the lowest point total in a win this season with 64 points against a Luther defense that forced Loras into 22 turnovers. The Duhawks had just five points with 13:08 left in the first half, and trailed 10-5. Loras clawed back into the game, and closed the first half on an 11-4 run to grab a 14-point lead at 41-27 after Gavin Sullivan hit an off-balance three-pointer that banked in at the buzzer.
Luther crawled back into the game by holding Loras to just three points to start the second half as Andy Rump connected on one-of-two free throws to make the deficit five at 44-39 with 11:51 to play. The Norse could get no closer the rest of the way, but Loras was unable to put the Norse away as Luther stayed within striking distance. The Duhawks made all six free throw attempts to seal the game.
Kyle White led Loras in scoring for the second straight time, tallying 13. Jeff Ludovissy added 11, but struggled from the floor, connecting on just 2-of-12 shots. Bobby Stineman also reached double figures with 10. Luther (6-14, 4-7) was led by Andy Rump’s game-high 17. Tony Brantner added 12 for the Norse.
The Duhawks shot 58.3 percent in the first half (14-24), but were only able to make six of 22 attempts in the second half (27.3 %) and finished the game shooting 43.5 percent.
Loras (15-5, 9-2) will take to the road with its Iowa Conference Championship hopes on the line as they face two nationally ranked teams (#14 Buena Vista and #17 Wartburg) next week. The Duhawks will also meet Simpson on the tough road stretch. The Duhawks face Buena Vista first on Tuesday night. The game is slated for an 8:00 p.m. tip-off and can be heard live on WDBQ, AM 1490.
