Elms 76, Newbury 66

CHICOPEE, Ma. — Elms College senior guard Kyle Seyboth (Seekonk, MA) netted a game-high 23 points – all in the second half, and the Blazers shot 60-percent from 3-point range in the second half to rally for a 76-66 win over Newbury College in Saturday afternoon’s non-conference men’s basketball game at the Maguire Center.

Seyboth connected on seven second-half 3-pointers, including four straight in the first 4:15 of the second half to spark a 17-7 run by the Blazers that overturned a three-point deficit at intermission.

With the win, Elms College won for the fifth time in its last six games to improve to 13-7 overall. Newbury College, which received a team-high 15 points and 10 rebounds from sophomore forward Sonny Abraham (Lynn, MA), lost its ninth straight game to fall to 2-16 overall.

After the Blazers opened the game with a 16-4 run in the opening 10 minutes of the first half, the Nighthawks responded with a 29-14 run to close the half. Junior center Kyle O’Connor (Georgetown, MA) dropped in consecutive 3-pointers in the final minute of the opening half to give Newbury a 33-30 lead at intermission.

From there, however, Elms College’s outside shooters took over, as Seyboth and sophomore guard John Ancrum (Harlem, NY) combined for all nine of their team’s second half 3-pointers.

In addition to Seyboth, three other players reached double figures for the Blazers in the victory. Freshman forward Renato Lindmets (Springfield, MA) registered his sixth double-double of the year with 18 points and a game-high 16 rebounds, junior forward Lonnie Branyon III (West Haven, CT) had 13 points and Ancrum finished with 10 points and a game-high nine assists.

Freshman forward Walky Magliore (Waltham, MA) scored 11 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and junior forward Matthew Stanton (Lynnfield, MA) added 10 points as the other two Newbury players to reach double figures.

Elms College returns to non-conference on Monday, February 7 at Trinity College, currently ranked 25th nationally in the latest D3hoops.com Top 25 Poll. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
