Gwynedd-Mercy 86, Cabrini 84

Radnor, Pa. — No. 24 Gwynedd-Mercy went into double overtime to cap off a big come-from-behind win, defeating Cabrini, 86-84, in a Pennsylvania Athletic Conference game Saturday afternoon.

Down by as many as 17 points with just over nine minutes in regulation, the Griffins stormed back taking a 72-70 lead on a breakaway dunk by forward Jeff Thomas with 47 ticks on the clock.

After Chris DelBrocco just missed a game winning shot at the end of regulation, the teams entered the first overtime tied at 72-72.

The Griffins raced out to a five-point lead in the extra session thanks to a big three-pointer from sophomore Kevin Lauer and a putback from senior Courtney Griffin to take a 77-72 GMC lead.

This time, the Cavs rallied, and tied the contest with 15 seconds left as Jim McMahon connected on his only trey of the game to deadlock the teams at 80-80.

In the second overtime, Gwynedd-Mercy built a four-point lead before Cabrini fought to get within 86-84 on a layup from Ty Teasley with 1:40 remaining.

Gwynedd-Mercy had several chances to ice the game, but missed on four occasions from the free-throw line. A last-second desperation shot from Messiah Reames did not fall as the buzzer sounded capping the comeback victory and extending their win streak to nine games.

With the win, GMC goes to 17-3 and 11-0 in the PAC. The win also clinches a playoff spot for the PAC Tournament.

Thomas was one assist shy of a triple-double, recording 20 points, 12 rebounds, and nine assists before fouling out in the first overtime. Teammates DelBrocco totaled 15 points and sophomore Francis Bowe netted 12 points.

Junior Rick Haas chipped in nine points and seven boards. The squad connected on 26-of-66 (39.4%) of its shots.

Teasley led Cabrini with 20 points and 19 rebounds as the team shot 25-of-75 (33.3%) for the game. Reames finished with 16 points while Jeff Dailey had 14 and Jim Good totaled 12 points for the Cavs (11-9, 7-5 PAC).
