Hobart 66, Union 65

SCHENECTADY, N.Y — Two of Joe Flacke’s game-high 29 points came on a reverse layup with 22 seconds left and Union’s attempt to win the game at the buzzer fell short as the ball circled the rim and dropped out as Hobart rallied past the Dutchmen, 66-65, in a Liberty League showdown at the Viniar Athletic Center.

Flacke, a 6’7 senior forward who graduated from Schenectady High School, scored 12 points and pulled down five rebounds in the second 20 minutes as the Statesmen rallied from a 39-30 halftime deficit. Hobart is now 6-2 in the league and 11-7 overall. The Dutchmen, meanwhile, fell to 4-5 in the circuit and 10-10 overall.

Union, which enjoyed a 37-27 lead with 2:03 left in the first half, built a game-high 11-point cushion, 43-32, with 19:05 remaining in the game on a layup by senior forward Devon Bruce. Hobart turned the game around when it outscored the hosts 11-3 over the next six minutes to pull to within three, 46-43, on Flacke’s layup with 12:37 remaining. Union regained an eight-point advantage, 51-43, on two free throws by junior guard John Cagianello with 11:38 left before a jumper by Flacke pulled the Statesmen to within two, 59-57 at 5:21.

Junior guard Chris Murphy gave the Dutchmen a four-point lead, 61-57, with a layup at 3:29 before a steal by Mike Mastro led to an Adam Fredeic layup with 2:29 showing to pull the visitors back to within two, 61-59. Frederic’s defensive rebound led to a three-point basket by Mike Fanning to give Hobart its first lead of the second half, 62-61, with 1:41 on the clock. Murphy’s two free throws gave Union a 64-63 nod with 1:22 left before Hobart’s Colby Feane and Cagianello traded layups leaving the Dutchmen with a 65-64 edge with 22 ticks remaining. Feane picked up an assist on Flacke’s game-winning hoop.

Flacke finished the game by connecting on 13 of his 14 field goal attempts while Feane contributed 11 points. Mastro also had eight boards for the Statesmen.

Union was led by Brian Scordato’s 14 points while Cagianello, Murphy and Bruce each added 11 markers. Cagianello led Union on the boards with eight.
