Wheaton (Ill.) 65, Millikin 62

Wheaton, Ill. — The Thunder men’s basketball team picked up a 65-62 win at home against Millikin University tonight in King Arena. Tonight’s victory was the fifth consecutive victory for the Thunder to improve its record to 15-3 overall and 5-2 in the CCIW. Millikin is now 10-8 on the year and 2-5 in conference play.

Wheaton led 25-15 with 8:30 left in the first half, but the Big Blue out-scored Wheaton 16-7 to close out the half for a 32-31 Thunder lead at the intermission. Millikin led by as many as seven points in the second half with a 51-44 Big Blue advantage with 11:45 left in the game. Wheaton went on an 8-2 run that cut Millikin’s lead to 53-52 with 9:11 left in the game. Millikin re-built a four-point lead with a 58-54 lead as 6:50 remained in the game. Four consecutive points by Wheaton senior Jon Nielson tied the game at 58-58 with 6:05 left in the game. The four points by Nielson was the start of an 11-4 run for the Thunder in the final seven minutes of the game. Two key baskets by senior Andrew Lettinga in the final five minutes of the game were critical to Wheaton securing the win.

Senior forward Martin Trimiew and freshman guard Kent Raymond each scored 16 points to lead the Thunder tonight. Trimiew grabbed a team-high seven rebounds, with three offensive boards, along with two assists and two steals. Raymond collected five rebounds and two assists, also draining two three-point field goals. Senior Jonathan Steven scored 11 points, with six rebounds and three assists. Lettinga was 4-for-5 from the floor to score eight points and he added six rebounds. Nielson scored seven points, with two three-point field goals, seven assists and two steals.

Chuck Williams led Millikin with 13 points, four assists and three steals. Lance Brooks came off the bench to score 10 points and block two shots for the Big Blue. Korte Long scored nine points with 16 rebounds, including six offensive boards.

Wheaton shot 43.3% (26-60) from the field, with 31.6% (6-19) from three-point range and 58.3% (7-12) from the free throw line. Millikin posted a 35.1% (20-57) field goal percentage, with 44.4% (4-9) from three-point range and 85.7% (18-21) from the free throw line. Millikin scored 26 of its 62 points off of Wheaton turnovers.
