Stevens 68, SUNY-Maritime 54

Throggs Neck, NY — It was another tough game for the Privateers as they dropped their eight in a row as they are stuck in a slump only surpassed by the New York Knicks. It was the Ducks of Stevens Institute that took a 68-54 victory home with them tonight and gave them their sixth Skyline Conference win moving them into a tie for third place. The Privateers are currently clinging onto tenth place in the conference, which would still grant them a first round match against either the fourth or third place squad.

Stevens owned most of this game, although the Privateers kept it close in the early goings. The Ducks came out to a four point run, it was then answered by Maritime, then a 6-0 run for the Ducks and once again matched by the Privateers. However, that trend didn’t last long and Stevens took a nine point lead with them into the break. The Second half was much of the same, with Maritime getting small runs, but none that were able to make up for the whole they dug themselves in the first half.

Junior center Robert Benton (Montgomery, AL/GW Carver) was once again the bright spot for the Privateers scoring 12 points, many of which came on easy baskets in the paint. Benton could have scored more, but the Privateers just couldn’t seem to get the ball into the post, a problem that has plagued them in their last couple of games. Forced into virtually a four guard lineup, Maritime struggled to get quality shots off and had some nice moves to the basket, just were not always able to get the ball to touch the bottom of the net.

Senior guard Marc Lashley (Queens, NY/Holy Cross) and junior forward Zishaan Raymond (Jenkintown, PA/Jenkintown) were the only other two Privateers to score in double digits, eleven for Lashley and ten for Raymond. Junior guard Isaac Moore (Phoenix, AZ/Moon Valley) led the way for the Ducks with 16 points while sophomore forward Tim Williams (Selden, NY/Newfield) added 12 points and senior forward Dan Jordan (Point Pleasant, NJ/Point Pleasant Boro) led the team with eight rebounds.

This Saturday, February 5th, the Privateers will travel across the river to take on the Mariners of the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point in a 2pm/4pm double header with the men’s teams going at it in the second game. For Maritime, this will be their change to break out of this slump and pick up a much needed conference win against a team that they struggled against here only a week ago.
