WESTMINSTER, Md. — Terror Defeats Devils in Overtime

The McDaniel men’s basketball team defeated Dickinson 79-76 in overtime on Wednesday night in the Gill Center. The win ended a seven game losing streak for the Terror, with the Devils dropping their fourth in as many games.

The first half saw 10 lead changes, with the two schools knotting the score up on seven occasions. Dickinson pulled out to a 10-4 lead in the first four minutes of the game capped by what would be the first of nine three-pointers by Brad Litchfield. McDaniel would go on a 16-5 run to take a 20-15 lead with 8:53 remaining in the first half.

The Devils answered the Terror run with a 6-1 spurt which tied the game up at 21-21 with 5:37 to go in the half. The two teams traded baskets the rest of the first half, heading into the break tied at 33-33.

The second half remained close, with no team taking a lead of more than four points until McDaniel’s Jemar Daniel hit a short jumper to give the Terror a 58-53 lead with 10:22 left in the game. The Devils would follow that with a 6-0 run in the next two minutes that put them up by one, 59-58.

A Kyle O’Connor (Columbia, MD / Mt. St. Joseph’s) lay-up with 8:25 to go gave McDaniel a 60-59 lead. The Terror would extend their lead to 68-65 with 3:49 to go, with both teams missing a combined six shots in the next two minutes. Litchfield hit his ninth three-pointer of the game with 1:55 to go to knot the score at 68 apiece.

Following an offensive foul on McDaniel’s Sam Anstead with one minute left in regulation, the Devils’ Matt Keys missed a three-pointer but teammate Travis Doll grabbed the offensive rebound and called timeout. Following the timeout, Litchfield was called for an offensive foul, giving the ball back to McDaniel with 32 seconds and the final shot. A stifling Dickinson defense forced a desperation jumper by Anstead which rimmed out and sent the game into overtime.

The Red Devils jumped out to a 74-70 lead in overtime, and didn’t trail for the first four and a half minutes of the extra period until McDaniel’s Anstead went coast-to-coast for the lay-up following fellow Terror Josh McKay’s huge block on Litchfield’s lay-up attempt. Anstead’s lay-up in transition gave the Terror the lead at 77-76 with 31 seconds to go in the game.

Following a Dickinson timeout, the Devils were suffocated by the Terror defense as Litchfield turned the ball over with five seconds to go. O’Connor made two free-throws for the Terror fouling a Dickinson foul, which upped the McDaniel lead to 79-76.

With four seconds remaining, a full-court pass by the Devils ended with a wide open three-pointer by Litchfield which rimmed out, giving the Terror the victory.

McDaniel was led by O’Connor who finished with 19 points, shooting 4 for 10 from behind the arc. Daniel added 14 points and seven rebounds, while Anstead chipped in with 13 points, five assists, and four rebounds. McKay finished with a career-high four blocks.

Dickinson’s Litchfield scored 37 points for the Devils, setting a new Gill Center record with nine three-pointers. The Devils’ twelve team three-pointers ties the Gill Center record. Jon Skvarka added a double-double, finishing with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Nine of Skvarka’s 10 boards were on the offensive side of the court.

With the win, McDaniel moves to 4-15 overall, 2-10 in the Centennial. Dickinson drops to 8-11, 5-7 in the conference. The Terror will travel to Haverford, Pennsylvania on Saturday to face the Fords. Tip-off set for 2:00 pm.
