Maryville (15-5) went to the half down by three after the Stormy Petrels out rebounded the Scots by seven and took advantage of their second scoring opportunities. OU led 30-27 at intermission.
Raul Placeres set the tone for the second half immediately with a steal and three-point basket to tie the score. Maryville would build an eleven-point advantage with 11:45 remaining.
Oglethorpe (10-9) used the next six minutes by changing their zone approach to an aggressive man-to-man defense. The change paid dividends and with 5:22 remaining OU tied the Scots at 56-56.
Freshman guard Bo Mason would hit a three-point basket and senior All-American Sidney Ellis would follow with a trey himself to pull away for the five-point victory.
Sidney Ellis led all scorers. He hit for 22 points and led MC with 8 rebounds. Paul Placeres tallied 13 points and 8 assists on the evening. Bobby Golden posted 10 points and 6 boards in the paint for MC.
Oglethorpe was led by the 21-point effort of Russ Churchwell. Eric Dickenson, Terry Bailey, and Josh Burr added 14, 12, and 12 points respectively.
Maryville returns to the Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Saturday to host Thomas More College. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
