Rowan 77, Kean 64

UNION, N.J. — Rowan University freshman guard Matt Byrnes (Mays Landing, N.J.) scored 18 points to lead five players in double-figures as the Profs defeated host Kean University in New Jersey Athletic Conference men’s basketball action on Wednesday evening. With the victory, Rowan improved to 13-6 overall, 6-4 in the NJAC, while the Cougars dropped to 11-9 overall, 5-7 in the conference.

Rowan used a 25-3 run over the span of nearly eight minutes in the second half to break open a 20-point lead, 63-53, with 8:58 left in the game. The Cougars battled back and cut the deficit to 10 points with a 14-3 run with just 1:19 remaining, however Rowan hit all six free throws in the final 70 seconds to seal the NJAC victory.

In the first half, the Cougars took a 30-29 lead at the half, as junior forwards Armet Coles (Staten Island, N.Y.) and BJ Hamby (Bridgewater, N.J.) had 10 points and nine points respectively. For Rowan, senior guard Bob Weir (Delran, N.J.) hit three three-pointers and had 11 points in the opening half.

For the game, senior guard Ryan Cochrane (Howell, N.J.) had 17 points, seven assists and four steals, while Weir finished the game with 13 points and six rebounds. Also in double figures for the Profs, senior center Brandon King (Sicklerville, N.J.) had a double-double with 10 points and 10 rebounds, and senior center Evan Johnson (Burlington, N.J.) came off the bench to score 10 points in 16 minutes.

Hamby paced the Cougars with 21 points, as he hit 7-of-11 shots from the floor and a career-best four treys. Coles finished with 12 points, while sophomore guard Bryan Keller (Piscataway, N.J.) had 13 points and four assists.

The Cougars return to action on Saturday, February 5, when they travel to Jersey City, N.J., to take on 2004 NJAC Champion New Jersey City University in non-conference action at 8 p.m.
