Greenville 75, Maryville (Mo.) 69

GREENVILLE, Ill. — The Maryville University men's basketball team fell into third place in the St. Louis Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SLIAC) standings after a 69-75 loss to Greenville College (IL) on the road. The Saints, who are now behind Webster (1st) and Blackburn (2nd) in the standings, drop to 8-11 overall and 5-3 in conference play. Greenville improves to 7-12 on the season and 4-4 in the SLIAC. The Panthers now stand in a tie for fourth place in the conference with Principia College (IL).
The Saints led for a majority of the first half, but Greenville ended the half with a 9-0 run to take an eight-point lead heading into halftime. The Panthers increased that lead at the beginning of the second half, as Maryville came out of the locker room one man down after sophomore forward Jason Rezabek injured his knee prior to halftime.
Maryville was plagued by turnovers and poor shooting at the start of the second half, but head coach Matt Rogers' squad never gave up. The Saints battled back from a 14-point deficit to take the lead with 8:38 remaining to play. The lead would change hands three more times, but down the stretch Greenville hit five layups and finished the game with a 14-8 run to grab the victory.
Leading the Saints' offensive effort was junior Ryan Klein with 16 points on 8-of-11 (.727) shooting from the field. Junior Ben Hebl added 11 points for the game, while junior Matt Regan had seven points and dished out a game-high four assists. Klein, Regan and seniors Andrew Hulbert and Matt Damrell each grabbed a team-high five rebounds.
Brandon Martin recorded a double-double to help the Panthers' to victory. He had 29 points and 11 rebounds, while also adding three assists, two steals and two blocked shots. Scott Foster also chipped in with 12 points, three rebounds and two assists, and Bryson Taylor tallied 10 points and seven rebounds.
Rogers and his squad will be back in action this Saturday, February 5, when they travel across town to take on the Griffins of Fontbonne University in a 3:00 pm SLIAC matchup.
