Christopher Newport 64, Shenandoah 59

NEWPORT NEWS, VA — CNU's men's basketball team broke it's two-game losing streak Wednesday night with a 64-59 win over visiting Shenandoah.

The Captains lost at Shenandoah back on Jan. 12, 76-66.

CNU, which lead by two at the break, 28-26, had a solid first half overall shooting from the field, finishing 11-of-27 (41%), they were 5-of-10 from behind the arc and just 1-of-3 from the free throw line.

The Hornets shot just 9-of-30 (30%) from the field, 2-of-10 on three's and 6-of-12 from the charity stripe.

The Captains started the second half shakey but finished strong hitting their free throws down the stretch, going 8-of-10 in the second half. CNU shot 13-of-33 (39%) from the floor and 2-of-8 on three's.

SU finished the second stanza 13-of-34 (38%) from the field, 2-of-9 on three's and 5-of-7 from the charity stripe.

The Hornets finished 22-of-64 (34%) from the floor, 4-of-19 (21%) on three's and 11-of-19 (58%) from the free throw line.

CNU finished 24-of-60 (40%) from the floor, 7-of-18 (39%) on three's and 9-of-13 (69%) from the free throw line.

The Captains defense did a solid job guarding Kenneth Purnell and Chris Rhone. Purnell finished 0-of-6 from the floor, 0-of-3 on three's and 3-of-4 from the free throw line. Rhone was 7-of-17 from the field and 2-of-4 on three's and just 2-of-6 from the charity stripe for 18 points.

The Hornets were lead by Rhone and Onyie Onunaku with 18 points each. Onunaku also had 10 boards.

CNU was lead by Jeremy Romeo with 15 points, Roderic Carey added 12 points, eight rebounds, and five assists and Steven Murrer contributed 12 points and seven boards off the bench.

SU is now 12-8 overall and 4-3 in the USA South. The Captains improve to 13-6 overall and 3-4 in the USA South.

CNU returns to action this Saturday as they travel to Chowan with tip-off set for 4 pm.
