Carleton was paced by Dan Forkrud’s career-high 26 points, six rebounds and five steals. Kyle Beste added 18 points, nine rebounds, three assists, four steals and two blocked shot for the Knights (12-8, 10-5 MIAC).
The win allowed the Gusties to claim one of the six MIAC Playoff slots and kept them a half game ahead of St. Thomas in the MIAC standings. The loss whittled Carleton’s lead over fourth-place Bethel University to a half game for third place in the conference race.
Andrew Olson nailed all five of his field-goal attempts, including 4-for-4 from three-point range, for 16 points while TeBrake netted 17 points and added six assists for the Gusties (14-5, 12-2 MIAC), who split the season series from the Knights and avoided being swept by Carleton for the first time since the 1992-93 season.
The game was a thriller with neither team leading by more than seven points the entire way with 10 ties and five lead changes. Forkrud’s follow of his own miss tied the game at 62-62 with 3:13 left. Trevor Wittwer’s jumper was followed by TeBrake’s three from the left wing, pushing the Gusties to a 67-62 lead with 2:18 left. Forkrud added two free throws with just under two minutes left, but those would be Carleton’s final points until a Jake Phillips jumper with 17 seconds left. The Gusties made 6-of-7 free throws in the final 1:19 to seal the win.
Gustavus shot a sizzling 62 percent (26-of-42) for the game, including 9-for-16 from three-point range. The Gusties committed 13 first-half turnovers, leading to 16 Carleton points, but cut that figure down to five over the final 20 minutes. Carleton shot 40 percent for the game and only 2-for-10 from beyond the arc.
Carleton returns to action on Saturday, Feb. 5, hosting Concordia College, Moorhead, as part of a men’s/women’s doubleheader at 3 p.m., while the Gusties are at St. Mary’s for a 3 p.m. game as well.
