Heidelberg 96, Baldwin-Wallace 86

BEREA, Ohio — Freshman forward Brian Schmidt scored a team-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds tonight (Wednesday, Feb. 2, 2005) as the Heidelberg College Student Princes upset the 12th-ranked Baldwin-Wallace College men's basketball team 96-86 in an Ohio Athletic Conference game at the Rudolph Ursprung Gymnasium in Berea.

With its win, Heidelberg improved to 6-14 overall and 3-10 in the OAC. With its loss, B-W dropped to 16-4 overall and 9-4 in the OAC and into third place. The loss also ended B-W's five game winnning streak.

In the first half, the Yellow Jackets raced out to a 13-11 lead with 13:11 left in the half on a jumper by senior forward Thad Davis. Heidelberg responded to that run with a 28-11 run over the next eight minutes to mount a 39-24 lead. Following a junior forward Scott Morrison three-pointer and a Schmidt lay-up, the Student Princes had their largest lead of the half at 56-35 with 42 seconds remaining. B-W senior point guard Tom Harrington's three-pointer at the buzzer cut the Heidleberg lead to 56-40 entering the locker room. Freshman forward Andrew Lemmon was a perfect four of four from behind the arc for 12 points in the first half.

In the second half, Heidelberg pushed the lead back our to 21 points after a three-pointer by freshman forward Greg Tyson with 12:28 remaining. B-W cut into the lead via two three-pointers by freshman guard Tyler Sekerak, the second of which making the score 87-78, with 4:38 left. The Jackets could only cut the lead down to eight points late, as the Student Princes continued to shoot the ball well, 57percent from the field and 58 percent behind the arc.

In addition to Schmidt in double figures for Heidelberg, freshman guard Shawn Shriver had 16 points, freshman forward Greg Tyson with 15 and sophomore center Ron Higgins had 10 points.

For the Yellow Jackets, Thad Davis and Tori Davis each had 19 points, Harrington had 13 points and junior guard Keith Aufmuth (Brooklyn) had 12 markers.

With his 19 points and eight rebounds tonight, Thad Davis now has 1,742 career points and 910 career rebounds to rank fifth all-time in scoring and fourth in rebounding.

The Yellow Jackets next play on Saturday, Feb. 5 when they travel to Westerville to play Otterbein College at the Rike Center at 7:30 p.m.
