Carthage led my as many as nine points in the first half with a 24-15 lead with 10:15 left to play before halftime. An 11-3 Thunder run made the score 27-26 in favor of Carthage with 7:00 left in the first half. The two teams stayed close to each other for the remainder of the first half as Carthage held a 45-44 lead at halftime. Carthage shot 53.3% (16-30) from the field in the first half, including 50% (6-12) from three-point range.
Wheaton led 61-60 with 11:25 left in regulation when a 7-0 Thunder run increased the hosts’ lead to 68-61 with 7:45 remaining in the game. It was at that point that junior guard Tony Bollier drained two consecutive three-pointers to help the Thunder put Carthage away for good with a 74-62 lead as 6:25 remained in the game. The Thunder defense clamped down on the Redmen in the second half as Carthage shot 38.1 % (8-21) from the field after halftime.
Freshman guard Kent Raymond scored a game-high 26 points on 7-for-10 shooting from the field, with 4-for-7 from three-point range and 8-for-8 from the free throw line. Raymond also added six rebounds and an assist. Senior center Jim Fortosis scored 15 points with six rebounds, including four offensive boards. Senior Jonathan Steven scored 11 points, with eight rebounds and two assists. Bollier was the fourth Thunder player to tally a double-digit point total with 10 points on 3-for-4 shooting from the field, including 2-for-2 from three-point range. Senior guard Jon Nielson scored nine points with nine assists and two steals.
Brian Schlemm led Carthage with 18 points, including four three-point field goals. Pat Kalamatas added 16 points, with 11 rebounds, three steals and two assists. Malik Imani scored 12 points, with five rebounds and Navarro Thompson added six points and six assists.
Wheaton shot 44.1% (26-59) from the field, with 52.4% (11-21) from three-point range and 80.8% (21-26) from the free throw line. Carthage shot 47.1% (24-51) from the floor, 45.8% (11-24) from three-point range and 55.2% (16-29) at the free throw line. Wheaton held a 35-34 rebounding advantage, with a 15-14 edge on the offensive glass.
