Cortland State 81, New Paltz State 73

CORTLAND, N.Y. — Junior Frank Ranieri (Cicero/Cicero-North Syracuse) led five Cortland double-figure scorers with 17 points as the Red Dragons (11-7, 6-3 SUNYAC) defeated visiting SUNY New Paltz, 81-73.

Sophomore Rod Headley (Peekskill) added 16 points and senior Justin O'Garrow (Port Washington/Paul D. Schreiber) recorded 14 points, three assists and three steals. Ranieri, Headley and O'Garrow shared the team lead with six rebounds apiece. Junior Brian Kirchhoff (Webster) scored 13 points and grabbed five rebounds and sophomore Dave Jutton (Red Hook) scored 10 points and dished out a team-best four assists.

New Paltz sophomore Amseshem Foluke-Henderson (Jamaica/American Studies) led all players with 21 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore Tony Cannon (New York City/Millbrook) scored 16 points, all in the second half, while sophomore John Hauser (East Williston/Chaminade) scored 10 of his 13 points in the first half and also finished with four assists. Sophomore Matt Irwin (Brooklyn/St. Edmund Prep) recorded seven assists.

The first half featured six ties and numerous lead changes. New Paltz (8-10, 3-7) held a five-point lead on two occasions early. Cortland's largest lead of the half was its halftime advantage of 37-31 when Jutton hit a three-pointer right before the buzzer.

Leading 44-39 with 16:40 remaining, the Red Dragons went on a 17-5 run over the next six minutes to take a 61-44 lead. Ranieri scored six points, O'Garrow five and Headley four during that stretch. The Hawks, however, responded with a 14-2 run, including 12 points by Cannon, to close with 63-58 at the 6:48 mark.

Jutton's three-pointer and Ranieri's layup extended Cortland's lead to 10 points with 5;06 left. The Red Dragons held a 79-66 lead with 1:03 remaining before New Paltz made one final surge. Foluke-Henderson scored seven straight points to pull the Hawks within 79-73 with 19 seconds left, but Kirchhoff drained a pair of free throws two seconds later to put the game away.

Cortland shot 48 percent from the floor, including 52 percent in the second half, while New Paltz hit 55 percent of its shots in the second half and 46 percent for the game. The guests were 11-of-22 from three-point range, including three treys each by Hauser and Cannon. Cortland made 8-of-17 three-pointers. Kirchhoff hit three shots from behind the arc and O'Garrow made both of his three-point attempts.
