In the championship tilt, the two teams were even at 10 through the first 4:44 of the game. The Spartans then fashioned an 18-6 run to seize a 28-16 lead with 9:29 remaining in the half. The Bears worked to trim the lead, cutting their deficit to a pair on a Luke Marlow free throw with 3:11 left in the half. York answered as they ended the half with a 12-3 run to take a 47-36 lead to the half. The Spartans were balanced in the first half as senior Kenny Fass led the green and white with 10 points. Ursinus stayed in the game thanks to the efforts of center Will Furey who poured in 18 points in the first half.
The Bears began the second half by outscoring York 10-4, working their deficit down to five a 51-46. The Spartans responded with a 15-2 run to push the lead to 66-48 with 12:20 remaining in the game. That marked the largest lead of the game for the green and white. York maintained the lead in double figures until Mike McGarvey split a pair of technical free throws, drawing the Bears to within nine at 79-70. Fass got a layup and then split a pair of free throws to push the Spartan lead back to 12 at 82-70 with 1:58 left. The Bears then got a lay up by Furey, another layup off a steal of an inbounds pass by Nick Shattuck and a Brian McEvily three to trim the Spartan lead to 82-77 with 1:19 left. Spartan Chad McGowan was fouled but missed a pair of free throws and Ursinus converted a Matt Fabian layup with 44 seconds left to cut the Spartan lead to three. Senior Brian Singer split his free throws with 15 seconds left and the Spartans got a stop and a rebound on the other end to preserve the win. Fass ended the scoring with a pair of charity tosses with six seconds left to provide the Spartans with their final six point margin of victory, their closest win of the year.
The Spartans were led by Fass as the senior tallied 17 points, grabbed eight rebounds, and had three steals. Fass was 4-for-8 from the floor and a solid 9-for-10 at the free throw line in his 38 minutes of work. McGowan added 14 points, a team-high nine rebounds, and two assists for the green and white. Singer chipped in with 13 points and eight rebounds while junior captain Brad Zerfing contributed 11 points including 5-of-6 from the free throw line in the game. Junior Joe Yeck was the fifth Spartan in double figures with 10 points including a perfect 2-for-2 from distance.
Furey ended the game with 27 points to pace Ursinus. He also had seven boards as he converted 10-of-18 from the floor and 7-for-9 from the line before fouling out late in the game. Shattuck added 16 points, six rebounds, five steals, and one blocked shot for the Bears. McGarvey recorded his second consecutive double-double with 10 points and 13 assists. McGarvey also had six rebounds and four steals for Ursinus. McEvily contributed 14 points and three rebounds while Fabian was the fifth Bear in double digits with 11 points while he tied McGowan for game-high rebounding honors with nine caroms.
The Spartans held a 45-36 edge on the glass while the finished the game shooting 48.2% from the floor. Ursinus converted 40.6% of their attempts from the field for the contest.
In the consolation game, Mt. Union, after trailing for a majority of the game, forced overtime when Eric Fender hit a deep three with just three seconds left in regulation. The Missionaries then controlled overtime, outscoring the Raiders 13-5 in the extra session to earn the third place finish.
Whitman received 33 points from Matt Kelly as he made 13-of-20 from the floor including 4-of-8 from three. Erik Kofler added 15 points and seven rebounds while Ian Warner had 13 for Whitman. Greg Ricker, Aaron Hazel, and Chris Faidley each contributed 10 points for the Missionaries.
Mt. Union was led by Chris Switzer as the guard poured in 29 points including five threes. Kyle Karpinski added 26 points, five boards, three assists, and two blocks to the Raider efforts. Josh Long was the third Raider in double figures with 15 points and a team-high eight rebounds.
York returns to action on Wednesday when they host SUNY-Brockport in a non-conference contest starting at 7:00 pm.
