Simpson 87, Culver-Stockton 62

River Falls, Wis. — Jason Parkinson’s (Jr., Scottsdale, Ariz., Horizon H.S.) 20 points led Simpson to a 87-62 over Culver Stockton in the second round of the Wis.-River Falls Cenex-Harvest States Classic Dec. 30 in River Falls, Wis. Parkinson was one of four Storm players to score in double figures. Jason Soppe (Jr., Dyersville, Iowa, Beckman H.S.) charted his second consecutive double-double with 19 points and 11 rebounds. The 6-5 center was 8-for-12 from the field. Scott Ellens (Sr., Storm Lake, Iowa, Storm Lake H.S.) scored 13 while Adam Thorson (So., Norwalk, Iowa, Norwalk H.S.) contributed 10. Coy Bainter led Culver Stockton with 11 points. Chris Tarpley was the only other Wildcat to score in double figures as he posted 10.

Simpson led 39-31 at halftime but opened the closing frame on a 17-3 run to seize control. Simpson shot 50% (29-for-58) for the game as the Storm held the Wildcats to 39.7% from the field. Using their bulk inside, Simpson went to the line 31 times, compared to only six for Culver Stockton. The Storm press was effective, forcing 23 Wildcats’ turnovers and created 16 Simpson steals.
