Heidelberg 89, Guilford 84

GREENSBORO N.C. — Freshman Chad Szalay's (Lorain, OH/Clearview) two free throws with 42 seconds left broke an 84-84 tie and helped visiting Heidelberg to an 89-84 nonconference men's basketball win at Guilford Friday. The win ended the Student Princes' (5-6) four-game losing skid and sent the Quakers (4-5) to their fourth consecutive loss.

The physical contest featured 14 lead changes and 13 ties (11 in the second half) and no lead greater than five points. Szalay made two free throws with 1:16 left that gave Heidelberg an 84-79 edge. The Quakers tied the game for the final time on junior Jordan Snipes' (Siler City, NC/Jordan-Matthews) third three-pointer of the game with 48 ticks remaining.

Szalay made his go-ahead free throws on the Student Princes' ensuing possession and sophomore Shawn Shriver's (Wakeman, OH/Western Reserve) steal at the other end thwarted Guilford's next possession. The Quakers fouled sophomore Matt Eberle (Grove City, OH/Central Crossing), who made one of two free throws with 19 seconds left for an 87-84 Heidelberg edge. Snipes missed a game-tying trifecta 10 seconds later. The Student Princes' Ron Higgins (Vermilion, OH/Firelands) grabbed the rebound and was promptly fouled. His two free throws with eight seconds left iced the Heidelberg win.

Shriver paced five Student Princes in double-figure scoring with a season-high 24 points (16 in the second half) thanks in part to five-for-eight three-point shooting. Sophomore center Brian Schmidt (Hinckley, OH/Brunswick) added 20 points and Szalay finished with 16 points off the bench. Higgins (10 points) and Andrew Lemmon (Port Clinton, OH/Port Clinton) (12 points) snared a game-high eight boards apiece. Heidelberg shot over 62 percent from the floor in the second half and made 25-of-37 free throws on the night.

Quakers sophomore Ray Edmond (Winston-Salem, NC/North Forsyth) tallied 18 points and eight rebounds, both team and season highs. Classmate Ben Strong (Chapel Hill, NC/Chapel Hill) chipped in 16 points and five boards in 24 minutes off the bench. Junior Thomas Burge (Winston-Salem, NC/Glenn) added 12 points and five rebounds for Guilford. The Quakers outrebounded Heidelberg, 41-36, but took 19 fewer free throws.

Guilford hosts Averett in a nonconference game Wednesday (1/4) at 7:00 p.m. The Student Princes host Otterbein Wednesday (1/4) at 7:30 p.m.
