Gustavus Adolphus 77, Carthage 70

KENOSHA, Wis. — The Carthage College men’s basketball team (3-7, 0-0 College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin) lost to No. 29 Gustavus Adolphus College (7-1), 77-70, on Friday, Dec. 30 at the Carthage Physical Education Center in Kenosha, Wis. Carthage led by as much as nine points in the first half, 32-23, at 2:27. The Gusties closed out the half with as 13-1 run to lead by three at the break, 36-33. In the second period, the Red Men went up by three, 41-38, at 17:15. The game was tied at 46-46 at 12:46 before Gustavus Adolphus went up to stay, 49-46, at 12:37. The Gusties had a seven-point lead, 55-48, at 9:12 and went on to win by seven, 77-70. Gustavus Adolphus shot 48 percent (28-58), while Carthage shot 44 percent (24-55). Trey Bowens and Brian Schlemm each had 18 points for the Red Men, with Schlemm adding six rebounds. Kyle Jeffery added 15 points and six boards. The Gusties’ Adam TeBrake led all scorers with 22 points on eight-of-16 field goals, including three-of-six three-pointers. Andrew Olson had 17 points, Phil Sowden 12 points, Trevor Wittwer 11 points, and Kane Sivesind added 10 points. The Red Men close out their non-conference schedule on Wednesday, Jan. 4 by playing host to Grinnell College (6-1) also at the Carthage Physical Education Center (7:30 p.m.).
