York (Pa.) 83, Mount Union 62

YORK, Pa. — The York College men’s basketball team used a strong first half performance to down Mt. Union 83-62 in the opening round of the 20th White Rose City Classic in York, PA. The Spartans, winners of 20 straight at Wolf Gym, improve to 7-1 overall while Mt. Union drops to 2-8. Ursinus College downed Whitman College 80-75 in the second semifinal to earn the right to face the Spartans in the championship game. Ursinus improves to 7-2 with the win while Whitman falls to 3-4 with the setback.

The green and white jumped on the Purple Raiders early as they led 17-5 just over six minutes into the game. Mt. Union cut the lead to nine on a Kyle Karpinski layup with 13:12 remaining but York scored 18 of the next 22 points to forge a 37-14 lead with 5:16 left in the half. Mt. Union trimmed the Spartan lead to 42-22 at the intermission.

The Spartans’ second half lead did not fall below 16 as York cruised to their seventh win of the campaign.

York placed five players in double figures led by Chad McGowan as the sophomore notched 17 points, nine rebounds, four steals and two blocked shots. McGowan was an efficient 7-for-12 from the floor including 1-for-1 from distance. Senior captain Brandon Bushey tallied 14 points and four rebounds as he took over sixth place on the Spartans’ all-time scoring list. His fourth point of the night pushed Bushey past former teammate Steve Schmehl as Bushey is now 138 points out of fifth place on the list. Freshman Quinn Howard tallied a career-high 12 points as the forward was 4-for-4 from the floor and a perfect 4-for-4 from the charity stripe. Howard also had three rebounds and two steals for YCP. Senior captain Kenny Fass and senior center Brian Singer were the other two Spartans in double figures as they each notched 11 points. Singer pulled down eight rebounds and had two blocks while Fass recorded five rebounds for York. Senior Paddy Lee had another solid night with seven rebounds, six assists, four points, and a steal in 20 minutes of action.

Karpinski led the Raiders with 17 points while he also had three rebounds. Chris Switzer and Eric Fender each added nine points for Mt. Union.

The Spartans finished the game shooting 54.4% from the floor while they also held a 47-27 edge on the glass against the Raiders. Mt. Union shot 37.7% from the floor for the game including 33.3% from distance. The green and white committed 24 turnovers that resulted in 16 Raider points.

In the second semifinal, Ursinus jumped out to an early lead as they never trailed in the game. Nick Shattuck put the Bears up 17-7 midway through the first half. Whitman cut the lead to six at 19-13 but Ursinus went on an 11-2 run to push their advantage to 15 with 5:14 left in the half. The Bears settled for a 35-22 lead at the half.

In the second half, Whitman battled the Bears cutting their deficit to four at 43-39 with 15:14 remaining in the game. Ursinus then blitzed Whitman with a 19-3 run capped by a Mike McGarvey jumper to take a 62-42 lead. The Missionaries kept the pressure on Ursinus as they responded to the Bear run with a 17-4 spurt of their own to trim the Ursinus lead to 66-59 with 3:42 left. A free throw and a Brian McEvily three pushed the lead back to double digits. The Ursinus lead would waver between eight and 11 points until Whitman’s Chris Faidley hit a pair of threes to end the game and provide for the final five-point margin.

Shattuck led the Bears with a game-high 28 points while he also had five rebounds. McGarvey notched the double-double with 18 points and a game-high 10 assists. He also had three steals and three rebounds. Will Furey was the third Bear in double figures with 15 points. Matt Fabian pulled down 11 rebounds to lead Ursinus.

Whitman received 21 points from Faidley as he was 7-for-10 from beyond the arc. Matt Kelley was the other Missionary in double figures with 19 points as he was 5-for-10 from distance. Aaron Hazel pulled down 11 rebounds in addition to scoring eight points for Whitman.

Whitman and Mt. Union face off in the tournament’s consolation game, tipping off at 4:00 pm on Friday. The championship game will follow at 6:00 with Ursinus looking to snap the Spartans’ lengthy home win streak.
