Ohio Wesleyan 65, Mount Union 55

DELAWARE, Ohio — Sophomore guard Kathleen Cooper and sophomore guard Steffi Graf put on a long-range shooting display that helped Ohio Wesleyan erase a 10-point first-half deficit and junior guard Emily Lloyd had a free throw and a lay-in during a key 9-1 run that put the Bishops ahead to stay as Ohio Wesleyan defeated Mount Union, 65-55, in the first round of the inaugural Bishop Classic on Thursday at Branch Rickey Arena.

In the tournament opener, Wooster cut an 11-point second-half deficit to a single marker, but John Carroll held off the rally and went on to take a 69-57 win.

Friday's second-round action opens at 3 p.m., when Wooster faces Mount Union, with Ohio Wesleyan and John Carroll to square off at approximately 5:15 p.m.

Mount Union took an early 6-0 lead over Ohio Wesleyan, only to see the Bishops come back to tie the game at 12-12 thanks in part to 3-pointers by Lloyd and Graf.

With Mount Union holding an 18-17 lead, the Purple Raiders then went on a 10-0 run that featured a pair of baskets by Alicia Williams and 4 free throws by Kyla Hogan.

Lloyd hit a 3-pointer and Cooper drilled a pair of long-range bombs to help Ohio Wesleyan close to within 32-26 at halftime, then Graf hit a 3-pointer early in the second half and Cooper drained another shot from downtown as the Bishops tied the game at 32-32 with 16:11 left in regulation time.

Williams answered with a bucket for a 34-32 Mount Union lead, but Cooper struck again from long range, with her 3-pointer giving Ohio Wesleyan a 35-34 lead. Williams came back with another score for the Purple Raiders, but freshman post Laurel Lawson stuck a 3-pointer from near the top of the key for a 38-36 Bishop lead, and after another Williams basket tied the game at 38-38, it was Lawson again, this time with a jumper from the lane to put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay at 40-38.

The Bishops stretched their lead to 6 points on a 3-pointer by sophomore guard Molly Baker with 11:11 left, but Mount Union tied it at 45-45 on a Tana Keller free throw, a lay-in by Williams and a Keller 3-pointer.

Lloyd put Ohio Wesleyan ahead to stay with a free throw, then Graf followed with a 3-pointer. After an Ashley Ross free throw brought the Purple Raiders within 49-46, sophomore post Kelli Lester converted a 3-point play and Lloyd scored on a steal and lay-in for a 54-46 Bishop lead.

Mount Union closed to within 56-53 on Hogan's lay-in with 5:40 remaining, but that would turn out to be the Purple Raiders' last basket of the game. Ohio Wesleyan added to its lead with a 3-pointer by Lloyd and a lay-in by Lester, then got a bucket and a free throw by Lloyd in the last 2 minutes to help put the game away.

Lloyd led the Bishops with 15 points, while Cooper and Graf finished with 13 points apiece. Senior guard Amanda Nanney led the Bishops with 6 rebounds and Cooper and Graf shared the team lead with 4 assists apiece.

Williams led Mount Union with 23 points and 11 rebounds. Lauren Friedrich had a team-high 4 assists for the Purple Raiders.
