Junior center John Patterson scored a career-high 23 points to lead the Centre College men's basketball team to a 90-76 win over Emory & Henry College, Thursday, Dec. 29, in Danville, Ky.
The game was played as part of the 2005 Papa John's/Country Hearth Inn Tournament hosted by Centre College. Hanover College defeated Berea College 70-63 in the first game of the night.
The Colonels, now 6-3 overall, limited the Wasps to a season-low 76 points. Emory & Henry, which entered the game averaging 119.1 points per game, fell to 2-6 on the season.
The contest was tightly contested for much of the first half with Centre holding a 19-17 lead with 9:04 remaining. A 12-3 Colonel run pushed the lead to 31-20 at the 3:54 mark. Centre pushed the lead to 15 points taking a 39-24 lead into halftime.
The Colonels controlled the entire second half leading by as many as 30 points (81-51) at one time. Centre finished the game shooting 56.9% (37-56), while Emory & Henry shot only 29.0% (27-93), including 20.0% (11-55) from beyond the three-point arc.
Patterson made 10 of 12 from the floor and all three of his free throw attempts to lead the Colonels off the bench. He also grabbed four rebounds and blocked two shots. Freshman Rob Matthews also scored a career-high in his young career, netting 11 points on four of four shooting from the floor and three of five from the charity stripe.
Seniors Coy Zerhusen and Reggie Magnusson scored 10 points each. Zerhusen also pulled down a game-high 10 rebounds for his third double-double of the season.
The Wasps' Camillo Weinz scored a team-high 13 points off the bench. Korey Townsend added 12 points. Hansel Newman pulled down a team-high seven rebounds in the loss.
Centre will return to action Friday, Dec. 30, to play Hanover in the tournament championship game at 7 p.m. Berea will take on Emory & Henry in the consolation game at 5 p.m. in Danville, Ky.
