Leading 10-9 four minutes into the game, Grace went on a 19-2 run over the next six minutes, and never let Buena Vista get closer than seven points the rest of the way. When the Beavers had trimmed the deficit to 35-28, the Lancers went on a 16-3 run to close out the first half and take a 51-31 lead into the locker room.
The Grace advantage mushroomed to as large as 33 in the second half as the Lancers coasted to the non-conference victory. Scott Moore tallied 17 points and seven assists. Eric Gaff notched a double-double with 14 points and a game-high 10 rebounds. Jeff Hamstra added 14 points off of the Lancer bench.
Andre Wagner, who hit five of the seven 3-point shots he took, led Buena Vista with 19 points. Jesse Schmidt, who contributed nine points and five rebounds, was the squad's next leading scorer.
Grace, an NAIA school which improved to 10-6 with the victory, held a commanding 41-28 rebounding edge. The Lancers drained 14 of the 35 three-point shots they took and committed just 11 turnovers.
Buena Vista shot 25 of 55 (46%) from the field including 9 of 20 (45%) from behind the three-point line. The Beavers have now dropped four of their last five games.
Buena Vista, 2-7 on the year, will now take on Purdue University North Central, which has a record of 4-12, in the seventh place game on Friday, December 30. The game is scheduled to start at 11:30 a.m.
