Lincoln 114, Christopher Newport 112

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Christopher Newport's men's basketball team let a 15-point second half lead slip away as 21st ranked Lincoln battled back and forced overtime and went on to win 114-112.

Mark Blasingame's two free throws with 6:35 left gave the Captains a 92-77 lead. Lincoln went on to out score CNU over the final six-plus minutes, 21-6 to tie the game and force overtime. Blasingame was whistled for a foul with three seconds left in regulation to send Thomas Hickson to the line for Lincoln for a chance to win it. His front end of a one-and-one was short. CNU had a chance to win the game before time expired, but Edward Riley's jumper from 15-feet wouldn't fall.

In overtime, Lincoln finished 6-of-9 from the field and 1-of-3 from behind the arc and 3-of-6 from the line to out score the Captains 16-14 in the extra session. CNU finished the extra session 5-of-9 (56%) from the floor, 2-of-5 (40%) on threes and 2-of-2 from the line.

The Captains took control from the opening tip, scoring the first 11 points of the game. CNU would lead by as many as 20 points in the first half, 48-28 with 6:01 left in the opener on a jumper by Davon Barton.

Both teams shot exceptionally well in the first half as Lincoln's Kyle Myrick, who averages 33 points per game, was held to just four. LU was 17-of-42 (41%) from the field, 8-of-20 (40%) on threes and 2-of-2 from the line. The Captains, who led at intermission, 57-44, scored 50 points in a half for the second time this season, the first came against St. Joseph's (VT), where the Captains dropped 54. CNU finished the half 23-of-39 (59%) from the field, 8-of-15 (53%) from behind the arc and 3-of-3 from the charity stripe.

In the second half, CNU continued its hot shooting, finishing 15-of-28 (54%) from the field, 4-of-6 (67%) from behind the arc and 7-of-11 (64%) from the line. Lincoln finished 19-of-36 (53%) from the floor, 6-of-12 on threes and 10-of-11 (91%) from the line.

For the game, LU shot 42-of-87 (48%) from the field, 15-o-f-35 (43%) from behind the arc and 15-of-19 (79%) from the line. the Captains finished 43-of-76 (57%) from the floor, 14-of-26 (54%) on threes and 12-of-16 (75%) from the stripe.

Lincoln was led by Bryant Leach's career high 36 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the field, including 7-of-14 from behind the arc. He also had 12 rebounds. Myrick, who had four points at halftime, scored 29 in the second half and overtime to finish with 33 points for the game on 12-of-26 shooting and 8-of-10 from the line and he also dished out 11 assists. Sami Wylie contributed 29 points on 10-of-20 shooting, including 7-of-17 from behind the arc.

CNU was paced by two of its guards. Donta Selden finished with a career high 33 points on 11-of-14 shooting, including an astounding 8-of-9 from behind the arc to go along with 3-of-4 shooting from the line. Freshman Davon Barton added a career high 32 points on 13-of-23 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc. He also added a career best 13 assists. Korey Lewis finished with 19 points, Riley added 14 and Blasingame added six points and 13 rebounds.

Lincoln improves to 11-3 on the year while the Captains drop to 6-3. CNU returns to action Wednesday, January 3 as they take on Maine-Presque Isle at 8 pm on day one of the Captains Shootout.
