Keystone 70, Christopher Newport 65

MYRTLE BEACH, SC — Christopher Newport's men's basketball's five-game winning streak came to an end Tuesday evening as the Captains dropped a 70-65 decision to Keystone (PA) on day one of the Myrtle Beach Classic.

Decision making and turnovers proved crucial for CNU against Keystone. The Giants took advantage of 18 Captains turnovers and turned them into 23 points. The Giants bench also out scored the CNU bench, 21-5.

Keystone led at the break, 40-35. CNU was 13-of-29 (45%) from the field but just 1-of-8 (13%) from behind the arc and was 8-of-10 from the free throw line. The Giants finished 15-of-33 (46%) from the floor, 4-of-11 (36%) on threes and 6-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Each team scored 30 points in the second half. CNU retook the lead 43-42 with 18:14 left in the game on a three-point play by Davon Barton. The Captains led by as many as five, 52-47 with 14:07 left in the contest on a jumper by Korey Lewis. The Giants roared back and took the lead for good, 56-54, with 10:01 left ona lay-up off a turnover by Darnell Reed. That would be as close as CNU would come, as Keystone one-upped any Captain attempt at a come back.

CNU was just 9-of-26 (35%) from the field in the second half and just 2-of-7 (29%) from behind the arc and finished 10-of-12 (83%) from the stripe. The Giants were 12-of-32 (38%) from the field in the second half, 3-of-11 (27%) on threes and just 3-of-7 (43%) from the charity stripe.

For the game, Keystone finished 27-of-65 (42%) from the floor, 7-of-22 (32%) on threes and 9-of-15 (60%) from the line. Christopher Newport finished 22-of-55 (40%) from the floor, 3-of-15 (20%) from behind the arc and 18-of-22 (82%) from the line.

The Giants were led by Reed with 22 points on 8-of-12 shooting from the floor, including 4-of-6 from behind the arc and 2-of-2 from the line. Robert Cash added 11 points and 12 boards while Charles Edwards and Rashawn Dennis each added 11.

The Captains were led by Lewis with 20 points and 10 boards. Davon Barton added 14 points, Donta Selden added 12 points, six rebounds and five assists and Mark Blasingame finished with his second double-double. The freshman finished with 12 points and 11 rebounds to go along with five blocks.

Keytone is now 5-3 on the year while the Captains fall to 6-2. The Giants will take on Greensboro, an 85-81 loser to Lincoln Wednesday at 2 pm. The Captains will take on Lincoln at 4 pm.
