North Georgia 103, Maryville (Mo.) 93

NASSAU, Bahamas — The Maryville University men's basketball team could not overcome a nine-point halftime deficit, as they dropped a 93-103 decision to NCAA Division II opponent North Georgia College at the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout in Nassau, Bahamas. The Saints fall to 5-4 overall with the loss, while North Georgia improves to 5-2 on the season.
Maryville shot 50.0 percent from the floor and 62.5 percent from the charity stripe in the first half, but North Georgia was 62.1 percent from the floor, 55.6 percent from three-point range and 77.8 percent from the free-throw line, as they held a nine-point lead heading into halftime. The Saints performance in the second half, which included 6-of-18 (.333) shooting from behind the arc, would fall just one point shy, as North Georgia outscored Maryville 55-54 for the half.
Turnovers continued to plague head coach Matt Rogers' squad, but Maryville did outrebound their opponent 41-33 for the game. The Saints would also finish 35-of-72 (.486) from the field, 10-of-28 (.357) from three-point range and 13-of-21 (.619) from the charity stripe.
Seniors Ben Hebl and Matt Regan led Maryville's offensive effort with 18 points a piece. Hebl, who was the lone Saints player to be named to the All-Tournament Team, also added three assists, two rebounds and two steals, while Regan dished out a team-high four assists, grabbed four rebounds and tallied two assists.
Also scoring in double figures for Maryville were seniors Stephen Bash and Tim Elwell. Bash recorded 15 points, seven rebounds and three assists, while Elwell had 11 points, three rebounds and three assists.
North Georgia was led by Buzz Wehunt with 29 points. He shot 5-of-8 (.625) from the field, 3-of-5 (.600) from behind the arc and 16-of-19 (.842) from the charity stripe. Matt Causey added 23 points and a game-high six assists, while Marcus Robinson, Mark Causey and Anthony Rowe tallied 18, 15 and 13 points respectively.
Rogers and his squad will return to action on Wednesday, January 4, when they host Washington University (Mo.) in an 8:00 pm matchup at Moloney Arena.
