Randolph-Macon 101, Lincoln 80

ASHLAND, Va. — The host #11 Randolph-Macon College men’s basketball team and #20 St. John Fisher College (NY) squad advanced to the championship game of the Hal Nunnally December Classic with first-round wins on Sunday, December 18th, 2005. St. John Fisher defeated Lake Erie College (OH), 57-55, in the first game, while Randolph-Macon beat #17 Lincoln University (PA), 101-80 in game two. The championship game between St. John Fisher and Randolph-Macon will be Monday, December 19th at 6:00 p.m., with the consolation game between Lake Erie and Lincoln starting at 4:00 p.m.

GAME #1: #20 St. John Fisher College (NY) 57, Lake Erie College (OH) 55

Records after game: SJFC now 5-1 overall/LEC now 6-2 overall

St. John Fisher was led by senior forward Mike McGee (Batavia, NY/Notre Dame), with a game-high 14 points. Senior guard Pete Gillett (Perry, NY/Perry) added 13 points on 5-of-8 shooting (62.5%). Fellow senior guard Sean O’Brien (Orchard Park, NY/Orchard Park) contributed with 11 points and a game-high four steals. Sophomore forward Justin Beigel (Cincinnati, OH/Colerain) had seven points, a game-high 11 rebounds and a team-high four assists.

For Lake Erie, junior center Jajcen Harris (Cleveland Heights, OH/VASJ) scored 13 points. Junior guard Howard Washington (Akron, OH/North) scored 10 points on 3-of-5 shooting (60.0%), including 2-of-4 three-pointers. Senior guard Reggie Richardson (Bronx, NY/Woodrow Wilson [OH]) added nine points and a game-high five assists.

GAME #2: #11 Randolph-Macon College (VA) 101, #17 Lincoln University (PA) 80

As a team, Randolph-Macon shot 50.7% overall (36-for-71), including 9-of-17 three-pointers (52.9%). The Yellow Jackets also went 20-for-24 at the free throw line (83.3%). The only loss for the Yellow Jackets this year was at Lincoln right after Thanksgiving break November 28th.

Five players scored in double-figures for the Yellow Jackets en route to the win. Senior forward Justin Wansley (Richmond, VA/Henrico) had 22 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. He made 7-of-8 free throws (87.5%). Junior guard Adam Krovic (Durham, NC/Jordan) also scored 22 points, on 8-of-11 shooting (72.7%) including 3-of-4 from behind the three-point arc, and grabbed five rebounds. Freshman guard Justin Short (Chesterfield, VA/Manchester) had career-highs of 14 points and six assists and tied his career-high with five rebounds. He made all six of his foul shot attempts.

Randolph-Macon senior guard Patrick Gill (Richmond, VA/Benedictine) came off the bench to contribute with 12 points, making 2-of-4 three-point baskets. Junior forward Phil Hawley (Weirton, WV/Tri-State Christian Academy) added 11 points on 5-of-8 shooting (62.5%), plus nine rebounds.

For Lincoln, senior guard Kyle Myrick (Philadelphia, PA/Overbrook) led the way with game-highs of 25 points, eight assists and four steals. He made 6-of-7 foul shots (85.7%). It was the first time Myrick scored less than 30 points in a game since the second contest of the season November 19th, when he had 26 points against Richard Stockton College of New Jersey in the championship game of a tournament at Elizabethtown College (PA). He began the season the day before with 11 points against King’s College (PA). Myrick, the nation’s leading returning scorer this year in NCAA Division III, Myrick came into the Randolph-Macon tournament Sunday averaging 33.0 points per game in ten contests this season.

Also for the Lions, sophomore forward Tyreek Byard (Philadelphia, PA/Franklin Learning Center) and junior guard Sami Wylie (Philadelphia, PA/Southern) each scored 14 points. Byard also had eight rebounds, while Wylie handed out five assists. Sophomore forward Darryl White (Philadelphia, PA/Frankford) added eight points and eight rebounds.
