The Seahawks held two eight-point leads in the first half, but the Shoremen came back and held a 43-42 lead at halftime. Washington extended its lead to 45-42 to open the second half, but the Seahawks went on a 14-3 run to pull in front, 56-48, in a T.J. Jordan lay-up with 16:19 on the clock. St. Mary's maintained a 61-54 lead with 12:56 to go , but the Shoremen went on an 11-4 spurt to knot the score at 65-65 with 10:43 remaining. Neither team led by more than four points the rest of the way as the lead changed hands three times in the next 10 minutes.
Senior guard Dustin Abbate broke an 80-80 tie with a three-pointer with 2:30 on the clock and gave Washington an 83-80 lead. Valdez Preston knotted the score on the next possession with a three-pointer of his own for the Seahawks. Senior forward Jonathan Webb made one of two free throws with 1:53 left to give Washington an 84-83 lead, but Spencer Way III knocked down a pair of free throws with 1:40 to play to put the Seahawks back in front, 85-84. A lay-up by Dan Engelstad with 56 seconds remaining pushed the St. Mary's lead to 87-84.
Moore converted a lay-up on the Shoremen's next trip down the floor to trim the lead to 87-86. A St. Mary's turnover gave Washington the ball back with 31 seconds left. Breslin's go-ahead lay-up came after Moore drove the lane and dished the ball to Breslin, who scored from the right of the basket. A potential game-winning basket by Preston came up short with two seconds left.
Senior guard Kyle Stem led Washington with 20 points and blocked two shots. Moore added 14 points, a team-high four assists, and seven rebounds. Breslin finished with a double-double of 13 points and a game-high 14 rebounds, eight of them offensive. Freshman guard Tim Kohlrus added 11 points, while junior forward Kevin Marshburn tallied a career- and game-high three blocked shots.
Tyson Lesesne led all scorers with 30 points on 12-of-22 shooting for the Seahawks. He also grabbed six boards and swiped a game-high four steals. Englestad added 18 points and a game-high seven assists, while Preston contributed 15 points and a team-high nine rebounds.
The Shoremen shot 41% from the field and 61% from the free throw line, compared to the Seahawks' percentages of 46% anf 68%, respectively, and turned the ball over six more times than the Seahawks. Washington did hold a 56-44 advantage on the boards, however, including a 22-12 margin on the offensive end. The Shoremen's bench outscored the Seahawks' bench, 36-8.
Washington's current four-game win streak is the Shoremen's first such streak in a season since they finished the 2000-01 season with four consecutive victories. The Shoremen's 5-4 start also marks the latest in a season that Washington has been above .500 overall since the close of the 2000-01 season when the Shoremen finished 13-10.
