Buena Vista 72, Marian 71

ELMHURST, Ill. — Andre Wagner's layup with five seconds remaining lifted Buena Vista University to a 72-71 men's basketball victory over Marian (Wis.) College in the consolation game of the Bluejay Classic Tournament hosted by Elmhurst College. Marian had an opportunity to win the game at the end, but Buena Vista's Jeff Bissen blocked the Sabres' final shot attempt and preserved the victory.

Mark Joekel scored a career-high 18 points as Buena Vista won despite not having the lead for the last nine minutes of the game until the final five ticks after Wagner's layup. Wagner and Rahn Franklin each added 10 points in the victory.

Buena Vista, which held a 43-34 rebounding advantage, led for the majority of the first half and took a 36-32 lead into halftime. The Beavers built up a 47-37 lead in the second half which was quickly erased by a 12-2 Sabre run. The advantage continued to switch hands until a Fidel Garcia three-pointer put Marian in front for the final nine minutes until Wagner's layup.

Marian had a chance to win the game when Nick Vogt released a last-second jumper, but Bissen blocked the shot to snap Buena Vista's two-game losing skid. The Sabres were led offensively by Vogt and Joe Horsch who each scored 13 points. Jordan Van Ess recorded a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds.

Buena Vista shot 47% from the floor while Marian hit 38% of its shots. It is the lowest shooting percentage that the the Beavers have held an opponent to this season.

Buena Vista improved to 2-5 on the season with the win while Marian fell to 4-7. The Beavers will resume play on Wednesday, December 28 in the first round of the Clarke Tournament by taking on two-time defending national champion UW-Stevens Point.
