Kings Point, NY - The United States Merchant Marine Academy men's basketball team suffered its second straight loss at home Saturday afternoon to William Patterson of the New Jersey Athletic Conference (NJAC), 85-55.
USMMA did not lead once in the outing. Kings Point hung around in the first 13 minutes of the ball game, trailing by just seven, before the Pioneers (6-3) doubled their margin en route to taking a 23 point halftime edge, 41-18.
In the second half, the Mariners never mounted a comeback and William Patterson continued to add to its lead. The Pioneers led by as many as 35 points en route to the 30-point victory.
Four Pioneers notched double-figures in the win. Luis Martinez had a huge day with a game-best 23 points and 18 rebounds. Mario Rivero notched 13, while Jon Torbick and Samir Sanu recorded 10 points each.
Senior center Zach Wyatte led the way for the Marines with 13 points.
USMMA (4-4) return to action for the nightcap of a double header versus City Tech on Jan. 4 at 7 p.m.
