Elmhurst jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead before Olivet battled their way back to take a 16-15 lead with under 7:30 to play in the first half. Elmhurst quickly reclaimed the lead and would never trail the rest of the game. The Bluejays carried a 27-23 lead into the locker room at halftime.
The Bluejays overcame poor shooting by holding Olivet to no points in the opening four minutes of the second half. While Olivet struggled, Elmhurst built its lead into double figures. The Bluejays held the Comets to without a field goal for the 9:15 of the second half.
For the game, Elmhurst shot just 38 percent from the floor (19-of-50) and just 12.5 percent (1-of-8) from downtown. The Bluejays converted 25-of-34 free throw attempts (73.5 percent). Olivet finished the game shooting just 31.4 percent (16-of-51) from the floor and only 23.8 percent from beyond the arc (5-of-21). The Comets hit 14-of-20 free throw attempts (70 percent).
Nick Michael led the Bluejays with 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting. He also pulled down seven rebounds en route to earning the tournament's MVP award. Chris Martin finished with a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds. Martin was also named to the all-tournament squad for the fourth time in his career. He joins Ryan Knuppel (1997-2001) as the only two Bluejays in school history to earn four all-tournament selections at the Bluejay Classic.
Pat Bacon came off the bench to score 14 points and Brian Lee added 10 points in the win.
De'Andre Clement came off the bench to spark Olivet, finishing with 10 points. Steve Johnson (also an all-tournament selection) and Gerald Dozie each finished with eight points.
The Bluejays are off until after the Holidays, returning to action on December 28 when they face UW-Superior in the Albion Holiday Inn Tournament.
