Maryville fell behind early in the first half, but they slowly battled their way back and had just a five-point deficit heading into halftime. The Saints would take over in the second half, outscoring the Spartans 41-36, but two Missouri Baptist free throws at the end of the half would tie the score and force the overtime period.
In overtime, Maryville senior Ben Hebl would score five of his 12 points to help the Saints outlast the Spartans. As a team the Saints would commit a total of 25 turnovers for the game, while forcing only eight by their opponent. It was Maryville's second half shooting performance though, that helped them pull off the victory. Maryville finished 29-of-57 (.509) from the field, including 12-of-23 (.522) from behind the arc. They also shot 16-of-19 (.842) from the charity stripe, including 10-of-11 (.909) in the second half.
Rogers had five players score in double figures, including sophomore Mike Turpen, who netted a game-high 24 points on 8-of-11 (.727) shooting from the field and 7-of-9 (.778) shooting from three-point range. Hebl added 12 points, two rebounds, two assists and one steal, while fellow seniors Ryan Klein and Stephen Bash scored 10 and 14 points respectively. Bash finished 6-of-8 (.750) from the field and grabbed a team-high nine rebounds. Klein was 4-of-4 (1.000) from the field, including 2-of-2 (1.000) from behind the arc, and recorded five rebounds and one blocked shot.
Also scoring in double figures for the Saints was freshman Aaron Steinke. He had 11 points, seven rebounds, three assists, while shooting 4-of-8 (.500) from the field and 2-of-2 (1.000) from the charity stripe.
Missouri Baptist was led by Franklin Penn with 19 points, 12 rebounds, eight assists, three steals and one block. Also scoring in double figures were Alonzo Franklin, Ryan Byrne and Joe Rothweiler with 18, 16 and 13 points respectively. The Spartans would finish 28-of-77 (.364) from the field for the game, including 12-of-33 (.364) from three-point range.
Rogers and his squad will be back in action this Sunday, when they tip-off against the College of Mount St. Joseph in the Bahamas Sunshine Shootout in Nassau, Bahamas. Game time is scheduled for 6:00 pm eastern standard time (EST).
