ROCKFORD, Ill. — The Rockford College Regents’ men’s basketball team defeated the North Park University Vikings Tuesday 78-68 to increase their season record to 4-6. The game began with two consecutive dunks from the Regents to begin an 11-point streak from which the Vikings would never fully recover. The first came from Allen Young (Romeoville, IL/Bolingbrook) after the tip-off, and the second of the dunks was tossed up by Dupree Powell (Rockford, IL/Jefferson) and slammed home by Jacob Dunkel (South Beloit, IL/South Beloit). The Regents ran the score up against the Vikings until they led by 26 at the half. The Vikings refused to go down without a fight, though, reducing the Regent lead to around 20 in the first five minutes of the second half, at which point the Vikings began to gain ground. However, in spite of reducing the lead to as little as 7 within the last two minutes, their efforts were too little, too late. The Regents carried the day and their fourth win of the season as the Vikings fall to 2-6.
The Regents were led in scoring by Maurice Smith (Loves Park, IL/Harlem) with 19 points and Jacob Dunkel, who had 15 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 blocks. Dupree Powell and Allen Young split for 21 points and 10 rebounds. The Vikings were led by Jay Alexander (Chicago, IL) with 15 points and 8 rebounds as well as Brett Mathisen (Lake Zurich, IL), who had 14 points and 9 rebounds. The Regents play again Thursday night at home against Judson College.
