Averett 79, Marymount 69

ARLINGTON, Va. — Behind a 57 percent shooting effort from the field, the Averett University men’s basketball team was able to defeat Marymount University by a 79-69 margin Sunday.

Averett (5-3), who was playing their second game in 24 hours, showed no signs of fatigue early on, connecting on 64 percent of their attempts in the first half. The Cougars hit 18-of-28 shots in the opening period to take a 48-35 lead at the intermission.

The Cougars led 67-54 with just over eight minutes to play after a Cameron Brown 3-pointer. However, Marymount answered with a 9-2 run to pull within six at 69-63 with six minutes left. They would get no closer, as Sterling Williams hit 6-of-6 free throws in the final 36 seconds to solidify the AU victory.

Williams led the way for the Cougars with 18 points in the contest. Cory McDaniel was 4-for-5 from the field, including 4-for-4 from behind the arc, for 14 points for Averett. Cameron Brown scored 11, while both Rafael DeLeon and Andrew Boor each added nine. Boor also pulled down nine rebounds in the contest.

For Marymount, Marc Mazzuchi and Brandon Parker each scored 16 points.

The Cougars will return to action on Wednesday at the Grant Center against Newport News Apprentice.
