Carnegie Mellon 79, Union 75

SCHENECTADY, NY — Carnegie Mellon defeats Union in men’s basketball, 79-75

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. – Carnegie Mellon took the lead for the first time with 1:03 remaining in regulation and pulled out a 79-75 men’s basketball victory at Union Saturday at the Viniar Athletic Center. The Tartans remain undefeated at 9-0, while the Dutchmen fell to 3-2.

A layup by Marques Johnson (Pittsburgh, PA/Upper St. Clair) with 1:03 remaining gave the Tartans their first lead and completed a 10-0 run in 2:32, as Union had a 75-67 lead with 3:35 left in the second half. Nate Maurer (Pittsburgh, PA/Linsly School) made two free throws with 3.5 seconds left to provide the final. Johnson had a game-high 27 points and nine rebounds for Carnegie Mellon, while Maurer, this week’s ECAC Div. III Southeast Player of the Week, finished with 22 points and 12 rebounds.

Union was led by John Cagianello (Wethersfield, CT/Loomis Chaffee), this week’s ECAC Div. III Northwest Player of the Week, who had 24 points. Brian Scordato (Mt. Kisco, NY/Horace Greeley) added 17 points and Darcy Bonner (Chicago, IL/Loyola Academy) scored 14. Jim Rahill (Buffalo, NY/Canisius) had a team high nine rebounds for the Dutchmen.

Union had a 40-38 halftime lead, and led by as many as 12 in the first half (26-14 with 9:37 left). With the Tartans within three at 47-44 with 15:52 left in the second half, the Dutchmen went on a 12-0 run in 3:48 for a 59-44 lead with 12:04 left. Scordato had six points in that run. But Carnegie Mellon pulled to with five with a 28-8 run in the next 7:57 (69-65) paced by seven points from Johnson. He tied the game at 75-75 on a layup with 1:44 left, then after a Union turnover at 1:10, the Tartans took the lead seven seconds later.

The Dutchmen shot 48% for the game and 90% at the line while the Tartans shot 41% from the floor and 67% from the stripe. The Tartans had a 46-35 rebounding advantage for the afternoon.

Union returns home Monday night to host Washington & Jefferson at 7 p.m. Carnegie Mellon plays at Princeton on December 28.
