La Roche 78, Thiel 71

— The La Roche College men's basketball team posted a 78-71 non-conference victory over the home-standing Thiel College Tomcats Saturday afternoon in Greenville.

Stacy Grady paced the Redhawks (2-4) with a game-high 23 points and nine rebounds, knocking down five-of-six three-point attempts. Nate Davis added 18 points and eight boards off of the bench while Frank Davis chipped in with 12 points and six rebounds.

Sophomore forward Joe Herrmann topped the Tomcats with his 20-point, eight-rebound effort. Sophomore forward Ross Watson added 13 points and five rebounds while sophomore guard Gary Gates totaled 12 points and five steals.

The Tomcats (2-5) took an early 11-3 lead but La Roche, fueled by a 15-7 run over the next 8:19, tied the game at 18-18 with just under 10 minutes in the first. After a 24-24 tie with just under five minutes to play in the first the Red Hawks outscored the Tomcats 16-2 to go into the locker room with a 40-26 lead.

La Roche extended their second-half lead to as many as 22 (50-28) early before Thiel pulled back to within seven (53-46) with 11:40 in the game. With La Roche up 12 (74-62) with 1:37 remaining the Tomcats used the next 1:21 to pull back to within four (75-71) with 16 seconds to play. The Redhawks knocked down four-of-five free throws down the stretch to seal the seven-point win.

The Redhawks finished with a 40-33 edge on the boards and shot 50.9 percent (28-55) from the field. The Tomcats forced 23 turnovers and finished shooting 38.7 percent (24-62) from the floor.

Thiel will return to action on Wednesday, Dec. 14 when they play host to Allegheny College. Tip off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m.
