Salisbury 69, York (Pa.) 67

SALISBURY, Md. — The York College men’s basketball team suffered their first loss of the season as Salisbury’s Ray Williams hit a runner in the lane with 1.9 seconds left to lift Salisbury to a 69-67 win at Salisbury University on Saturday. The Spartans, who are currently ranked sixth in the nation, fall to 5-1 overall and 1-1 in the CAC while Salisbury, who remain perfect at home, improve to 6-4 overall and 1-1 in the conference.

The Spartans stormed out of the gate as they led 16-4 just over six minutes into the game. That opening run was capped by three pointers from Brandon Bushey and Nate Fry. The Sea Gulls responded with a very impressive 20-4 run that handed Salisbury the 22-20 lead with 8:17 left in the first half. Each team would score ten points in the remaining eight minutes of the half as the Gulls took a 32-30 lead to the intermission. It is the first time in six games that the Spartans have trailed at the break.

With the game tied at 37, the Sea Gulls went on a 11-2 run to give them a nine point lead with 14:26 remaining in regulation. The Gulls maintained their lead around nine points which is where it stood after a Williams’ three with 10:21 left. The Spartans scored the next 10 points to take a 59-58 lead with 6:55 showing on the clock. Justin Rice hit a jumper in the next possession to give the lead back to Salisbury. York would not see the lead the rest of the way.

Salisbury built their advantage to four on a Marcus Crenshaw free throw with 1:43 left. Bushey hit a pair of free throws with 50 seconds remaining and then Brad Zerfing hit a knifing shot in the lane to tie the game at 67 with 9.6 seconds left. That set the stage for Williams who received the inbounds pass and cut into the lane, nailing the game winning shot. York’s inbounds pass to halfcourt was intercepted and the Sea Gulls’ upset of the Spartans was sealed.

Williams was outstanding for Salisbury has he had a game-high 21 points. He hit 7-of-18 from the field including 4-of-7 from three and 3-for-4 from the charity stripe. Rice added 14 points and four rebounds to the Sea Gull attack. Gary Ward was the third Gull in double figures with 12 points. Kyle Harmon led the Gulls on the boards with eight caroms while he also had eight points.

Senior captain Kenny Fass led the green and white with 19 points, three steals and two blocked shots. Fass was 6-for-10 from the floor including 3-of-7 from distance. Bushey added 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists for YCP. Chad McGowan was the third Spartan to reach double figures with 12 points while he also had five rebounds and two assists. Senior Paddy Lee pulled down 10 rebounds to lead York while he also had four points, five assists, and three steals in 28 minutes of play.

For the second straight game, the Spartans were out rebounded as Salisbury held a 45-39 advantage on the glass. York finished the game shooting 41.1% from the floor and 35% from three. Salisbury shot 36.9% from the floor but a blistering 50% (11-for-22) from three. Neither team was great at the free throw line as Salisbury was 10-for-16 (62.5%) while York converted 14-of-their-22 attempts (63.6%).

Game time in Huntingdon is set for 7:30 pm. The game will be broadcast on ESPN 1350 WOYK. The pregame show starts at 7:15 pm.
