ALTOONA, Pa. — Despite 27 points from junior guard Beau Wilson, Waynesburg fell 75-70 to Penn State-Altoona on Saturday afternoon at the Alder Gym. Wilson scored 16 of his 27 points in the first half to give Waynesburg (3-4) a 35-31 lead. The three-year starter connected on 10-of-16 attempts from the field, including 6 of 10 from beyond the arc. Wilson has bucketed 20-plus points in four games this season and leads the team with 18.9 points/game.
With the scored knotted at 59-59 with 8:26 left to play, the Yellow Jackets took a 61-59 lead on a lay-up by sophomore forward Josh Parisi. Over the next three-plus minutes, Waynesburg expanded the lead to seven points, 68-61, when senior swingman Ryan Bujnowski hit a three-pointer.
The Lions then made four free throws before Mike Dancer hit a three-pointer to tie the score at 68-68 with 3:35 left. The score remained tied until Dancer sunk another three-pointer with 1:52 left on the clock. PSU-Altoona converted four free throws during the final 25 seconds to seal the victory.
Dancer, a 6-4 reserve swingman, led the way for the Lions with 19 points on 6-of-13 attempts, including 5 of 11 from long distance. In addition to Dancer, four of the five starters for PSU-Altoona reached double figures, including Quintin Dziabo who led all players with nine rebounds.
In the first half, Wilson led all players with 16 points, as the Yellow Jackets held a 35-31 halftime edge. Waynesburg built 24-17 lead with 7:29 left in the first period behind a pair of treys from Wilson, a native of West Virginia. Waynesburg shot 48 percent from the floor (13 of 27) while PSU-Altoona made 43 percent of its field goals (13 of 30). WC held a 17-13 edge in rebounds during the first half with junior Jeff Nero grabbing a game-high five rebounds.
Nero finished the game with seven boards and eight rebounds for the Yellow Jackets.
Waynesburg now breaks for the fall semester examination period. The Yellow Jackets return to action on Monday, Dec. 19, when they travel to face another Penn State branch campus - New Kensington. Waynesburg won the first-ever meeting against the Lions of New Kensington last season, 78-71, in overtime, as Bujnowski and Wilson combined for 39 points.
