Kings Point 93, Medgar Evers 79

12/10/05 — Brooklyn, NY – The United States Merchant Marine Academy men’s basketball team got a huge lift from freshman forward Alex Loepker, who notched a career-high 23 points en route to leading Kings Point to a 93-79 non-conference victory over Medgar Evers College.

Kings Point just trailed once on the day and that came just 27 seconds into the contest with the first bucket made by the Cougars’ Travis Kennedy. Loepker would knot the affair, followed by a Lou DeCarlo three pointer to give the Mariners the lead for good. Medgar Evers would pull back to within one (5-4) at the 17:30 mark on yet another Kennedy field goal, but the Mariners quickly made mincemeat of Cougars with an 11-0 run over the span of 3:10 to take control of the game.

USMMA lead by as many as 15 points in the first stanza and took a nine-point margin into the break, 42-33.

In the second half, the Mariners continued to pour salt in the wounds of MEC leading by as many as 21 points en route to the fourteen-point triumph.

In addition to Loepker’s big day, three other Mariners notched double-figures, including seniors Zach Wyatte and Paul Tricarico with 19 and 13 points, respectively. Junior Brian Kelly chipped in with 10, while Stephen McDade added nine off the bench.

The Cougars (3-5) were led by Perry Wilkes with 24 points, while Kenneth Griffin tallied 21 in the loss. Kennedy finished the day with a double-double of 18 points and 10 boards.

The deciding factor in the game came in bench play, as the USMMA subs outscored that of Medgar Evers, 20-7.

USMMA (3-2) returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 13 at Liebertz Gymnasium versus Baruch College at 7 p.m.
