In a defensive first half, Maryville took a six-point lead to the locker room after the Pioneers only hit 28% from the field and only one 3-pointer. The Scots hit on 47% of their attempts and put down half of their shots from beyond the arc. At intermission Maryville led 30-24.
Both teams increased the defensive pressure in the second half. The key to MC’s success was to not allow Transy many second opportunity baskets. The Scots out-rebounded the Pioneers by 13 boards.
Transylvania (5-2) had three players score in double figures. Matt Finke deposited 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds. Bryan Howard and Joey Searle each tossed in 12 points. Joey Verax helped the Pioneer offense with a 10-point effort.
Bo Mason’s 18 points paced the Scots. Bobby Golden added 17 and 7 rebounds. Monte Calloway added a double double with 12 rebounds and 12 points.
Maryville will now travel to Danville, Virginia to challenge Averett University on Saturday, December 17. Tip-off is scheduled for 3:00 p.m.
