Oneonta, NY — Brian Fenton (Levittown, NY/Island Trees) netted 22 points in St. Joseph’s (LI) 83-69 victory Saturday evening over Fitchburg State in the opening round of the Holiday Inn Classic in Oneonta, NY. The Golden Eagles will face the winner of Oneonta State-Hartwick game on Sunday at 2pm in the championship tilt. Fitchburg State will meet the loser in the consolation game at noon. St. Joseph’s broke open the contest, which was tied at the half, by connecting on 15 of its first 21 field goals attempts in the second stanza. Joe Meglio (Dix Hills, NY/Half Hollow Hills) amassed 16 points and a team-best 7 rebounds while Jorge Martinez (Brentwood, NY) added 15 points and David Acree (Wheatley Heights, NY/Brentwood) chipped in with 14 points.
Fitchburg State actually led by 12 points midway through the first half before the Golden Eagles inched back to even the game at the break on a pair of free throws in the closing seconds by Meglio. The Falcons were paced by Matt Collins (Southington , CT) who poured all of his 11 points in the first half including a trio of three-pointers. Nick Smith (Fitchburg, MA/Leominster) tallied 10 points FSC and Peter Uzoma (Boston, MA/Concord-Carlisle) contributed 8 points and 8 rebounds.
The loss extended Fitchburg State’s streak of opening round tournament losses to six. The Falcons last opened a tournament with a win in November of 2001 versus New England College in the Keene State Tip-Off Tournament.
