Augustana 75, Concordia (Ill.) 58

RIVER FOREST, Ill. — After Saturday afternoon's snow made for a long trip from Rock Island, so much so that the start of the game was pushed back 30 minutes, the host Concordia Cougars threatened to leave 17th ranked Augustana College snowbound with a determined effort before a large crowd in CU's Geiseman Gymnasium. However, the Vikings had the ultimate thaw in Rick Harrigan. The 6'3" senior guard torched the Cougars for 38 points as Augustana pulled away at the end for a 75-58 win, improving to 7-0. Concordia fell to 4-3.
Harrigan scored 18 in the first half as the Vikings shot 55 percent and led by a 37-27 score. The visitors' lead was 46-37 with 15:06 remaining when the Cougars made their move. Freshman Kas Wleklinski hit a free throw and followed with a three on the next possession. After a basket by Augustana's Jay McAdams-Thornton (17 points), Bryan Ganek answered with a three. Moments later, Justin Gray scored on a fast break, and the home team was down by just 48-46.
The score stood at 54-51 with 7:30 left when - who else? - Harrigan made the play of the game. Harrigan connected on a three from the left wing and was fouled on the shot. He hit the free throw to complete the rare four-point play and give the Vikings a seven-point lead. The next two possessions resulted in threes by Mike Kolze and Harrigan, and Augustana had bolted to a 64-51 lead with 6:11 to play. Concordia would get no closer than eight points the rest of the way.
Harrigan's final line read 14-20 from the field including 5-9 from three-point range, and 5-7 from the foul line. The Vikings finished 28-53 (53 percent) from the field and 7-15 (47 percent) from three-point range. Concordia finished with four players in double figures, led by Wleklinski's 13 and Bobby Smith's 11.
