Carleton 62, Bethany Lutheran 54

— Dan Forkrud scored 21 points and grabbed 10 rebounds as Carleton College closed the first half on an 11-2 spurt and held off visiting Bethany Lutheran College, 62-54, at West Gym.

Jake Phillips scored 14 points, going 4-of-5 from three-point range, and Zach Johnson added 12 points and five rebounds for the Knights (4-4).

Alfonso Mayfield paced Bethany Lutheran (3-5) with 19 points and Dewan Grant added 12 points and seven rebounds.

BLC took its largest lead of the game at 20-18 on a Ross Libby triple, but the Knights closed the final 6 minutes, 28 seconds of the half by scoring 11 of the half’s final 13 points.

The visitors, who shot only 30 percent from the floor, closed within two points early in the second half, but Carleton used a quick 9-2 run, with Johnson scoring four of the nine points, to push ahead 42-33. A Grant jumper made it 51-50 with 6:13 left, but Phillips drilled a three, Forkrud scored on a put-back and Brian Sharkey (Sr./Bow, N.H./St. Paul’s School) buried a three from the corner to push the lead back to nine.

Carleton shot 51 percent from the floor but turned the ball over 19 times, leading to 13 Viking points. The Vikings outrebounded the Knights, 42-32, but made only 3-of-18 three-point attempts compared to 7-of-19 for Carleton.
